会议介绍：

国际韩礼德研究会(InternationalAssociation for Hallidayan Linguistics)于2019年5月27日注册成立于澳大利亚悉尼。作为一个独立法人社团，我们的宗旨是推动韩礼德语言学思想研究，服务国际上对系统功能语言学感兴趣的广大学者。我们每年举办相关的“青年学者论坛”、“高层论坛”、“年会”等学术活动。北京大学资深教授胡壮麟先生作为韩礼德在中国的第一代弟子，是学会的名誉会长。中山大学外国语学院丁建新教授任会长。学会着眼于“后韩礼德时代”的功能语言学，践行学术国际化，重点扶植青年学者。目前会员已达1000多人。

国际韩礼德研究会2021年会由国际韩礼德研究会与广州南方学院外国语学院联合举办。由于疫情关系，我们决定于2021年9月26日通过腾讯会议平台举办。欢迎国内外对韩礼德研究感兴趣的同仁免费参加。

Secular communion: the carrot and the stick

In this presentation I'll present a review ofselected aspects of SFL research on the language of administration and makesome suggestions for further developments. Initial work concentrated on mappingkey genres (of guidance, compliance and surveillance in Iedema's 1995 terms)and the de/personalising affordances of interpersonal resources (the discoursesemantics of mood and modality in particular). Iedema (e.g. 2003) extended thiswork by introducing a multimodal perspective on resemiotisation in an extendedplanning process. And Szenes (e.g. in press) brings appraisal analysis into thepicture through her studies of the re/couplings of attitude and ideation inbusiness decision-making. This turn raises some general questions about themanagement of feeling in administrative discourse which I'll approach from thecomplementary perspectives of iconisation and technicalisation (Martin 1993,2010) – for example the iconisation of attitude as values (the administrator'scarrot if you will) and the technicalisation of judgement as regulations and ofappreciation as measurable outcomes (the adminstrator's sticks).

 Uncomfortable as the carrots and the stickscan make us all feel, especially in a culture underpinned and undermined by adeep grammar of irreverence, we can't live together without them (as ourvaccination and quarantine fiascos attest). What kind of respectful renovationsmight a social semiotic perspective contribute to a better managed world?
